药剂的有效成分。原料药只有加工成为药物制剂，才能成为可供临床应用的医药。原料药根据它的来源分为化学合成药和天然化学药两大类。化学合成药又可分为无机合成药和有机合成药。无机合成药为无机化合物(极个别为元素)，如用于治疗胃及十二指肠溃疡的氢氧化铝、三硅酸镁等；有机合成药主要是由基本有机化工原料，经一系列有机化学反应而制得的药物，如阿司匹林、氯霉素、咖啡因等。天然化学药按其来源，也可分为生物化学药与植物化学药两大类。抗生素一般系由微生物发酵(见发酵过程)制得，属于生物化学范畴。近年出现的多种半合成抗生素，则是生物合成和化学合成相结合的产品。原料药中，有机合成药的品种、产量及产值所占比例最大，是化学制药工业的主要支柱。原料药质量好坏决定制剂质量的好坏，因此其质量标准要求很严，世界各国对于其广泛应用的原料药都制订了严格的国家药典标准（如《中华人民共和国药典》、《英国药典》）和质量控制方法(见药品生产和质量管理规范)。
