地毯织机与一般织机有许多类似之处，不同的地方是装有成绒机构，使地毯表面形成特定形状的绒毛。地毯织机于19世纪70年代由英国发明。现今地毯织机生产的地毯，其绒毛多数呈簇绒状，少数呈毛圈状。簇绒地毯织机由绒轴架、双梭口开口机构、插绒机构、双引纬机构、双打纬机构、挑绒机构和割绒机构组成。绒轴架上的绒轴数和地毯每一完全组织中配色不同的纬向簇绒列数相同。在织制过程中，插绒机构从绒轴架中握持一根绒毛线向下运动，把一定长度的一列配色绒毛插入双梭口的经纱中间。随后,上引纬杆发动第一次引纬,把一根双纬引入上梭口。接着筘座前进完成第一次打纬。当筘座后退时，绒毛被嵌入织口和刚引入梭口的纬线之间。随着筘座的继续后退，梭口闭合起来。与此同时，挑绒杆开始向后运动，先把绒毛折向后方，而后又向上方运动把绒毛弯曲成U形，插入经绒。此时,梭口进一步张开，上、下两根引纬杆同时驱动，把两根双纬绒同时分别送入上、下两个梭口。随后割绒刀前进，把喂入地毯的绒毛割断。当筘座再次前进时，把上、下两个梭口中的双纬线推到织口。随着筘座的后退，梭口又闭合起来，恢复开始时的位置，完成一次成绒过程。20世纪60年代以来，由于人造纤维的大量应用，各种新型簇绒地毯不断出现。但是就艺术效果和使用价值来说，由一般地毯织机织制的簇绒地毯都比手工簇绒地毯逊色。
