植物形态：落叶乔木，高达25米，直茎1米。小枝褐色，有很多黄色点状椭圆形的披孔，被短柔毛。叶对生，掌状复叶，叶柄长6~15厘米，被短柔毛；小叶5~7枚，小叶柄长0.4~2厘米，也有短柔毛，小叶片倒卵状长椭圆形或卵状披针形，长10~20厘米，宽3~8.5厘米，先端突尖，基部宽楔形或近于圆形，边缘有细锯齿，表面仅于疏生有细柔毛，背面密生细柔毛，侧脉14~20对。花杂性，白色，顶生圆锥花序，尖塔形，长达35厘米，宽8厘米，花萼筒形，有不整齐的5浅裂，花瓣4枚，上2瓣较下2瓣窄长，花瓣的外面和边缘密生细柔毛，雄蕊6~8枚，花丝长短不等；两性花的子房上位，3室，卵形，密生细柔毛。蒴果卵形或倒卵形，顶端突起而尖，外表密生有黄褐色的斑点，成熟时3瓣裂。 生态分布：产我国长江流域各省，多生于海拔1000~1500米山林中。 药用部分：种子入药，9~11月果实成熟时采摘。摘下后，整个晒干或剥皮晒干。 用途：性味甘、温，无毒。理气宽中，杀虫。治胸脘胀痛，疳积，痢疾等症。用量：1~2钱。
