   棕榈科棕枣属常绿大乔木。又称椰枣、海枣、伊拉克蜜枣。热带重要干果。原产西亚和北非,是最早驯化的果树之一。很久以来一直是地中海、红海沙漠地带的主要食品。以埃及、伊拉克、沙特阿拉伯和伊朗栽培最多。唐代传入中国,现广东和云南地区有栽培。树干高可达20~30米。羽状复叶。雌雄异株,花序外有肥壮佛焰苞,雄花成圆锥花序,雌花成穗状花序,腋生。浆果长椭圆形,似枣子。

   以分蘖苗繁殖的结果早,且能保持母株特性。喜高温低湿。对土壤要求不严,以微碱土、地下水较充分而又不积水的为适。定植时应配置2%雄株作授粉树。分蘖苗植后5年可结果。大小年现象较普遍。干果含糖分达60%~70%,蛋白质、脂肪均在2%以上,可鲜食或作蜜饯。
