普林尼式喷发(plinian eruption)
岩浆粘度大、爆发强烈,火山碎屑物常达90%以上,其中围岩碎屑占10%-25%,喷出物以流纹质与粗面质浮岩、火山灰为主,分布较广,伴有少量熔岩流或火山灰流。由于爆发强烈及岩浆物质大量抛出,常形成锥顶崩塌的破火山口。这种火山喷发过程常为:清除火山通道-岩浆泡沫化-猛烈爆发出浮岩及火山灰-通道壁上碎石坠入及堵塞火山通道,如此反复作用,形成复杂的火山机构。公元79年维苏威火山爆发是典型的普林尼式喷发,伴随喷发大规模降落浮石、火山渣和火山灰。喷出的火山渣顺风降落,离火山口13km的庞贝城,为平均7m 厚的浮石层所掩埋。日本1783年的浅间火山活动也同样降下浮石层,大喷发中同时有火山碎屑流和熔岩流的喷出。1980年5月18日美国圣海伦斯火山爆发也是普林尼式,爆发时形成热液-岩浆爆炸。
