纳帕海自然保护区位于中甸县城西北部，距县城8公里。保护区面积31.25平方公里，海拔3266米，湖泊积水面积660平方公里。
保护区地势平坦，三面环山，冬夏季节，山岭积雪，纳曲河、奶子河等十余条河弯弯曲曲，流经草原注入纳帕海。海西北面的辛雅拉雪山山麓有天然落水洞九处，湖水经过溶洞，从尼西汤满排出，流入金沙江。
由于保护区气候湿润，牧草生长比同类地区快，青翠的碧草，像一块巨大的绿色地毯，无穷无尽地铺展在大地上，几乎覆盖了天底下的一切。草原上的羊、牛、马有时各自成群，有时混杂交织，它们悠闲地吃着草，和辽阔的草原融为一体。它们是绿色草原上的彩色图案，是天地间美妙的生命之花。西面的石卡、叶卡、辛雅拉三大雪山俏在挺立。雪山草原和牛羊组成了大西南的塞北风光，也使春季的纳帕海草原从柔美中透出无限的生机。
纳帕海是高原季节性湖沼。夏末秋初，雨水频降，湖面增大，秋末至次年夏秋，湖水下落。10月，秋风渐起，成群的黑颈鹤、斑头雁、白鹤、黄鸭、麻鸭如期而至，在湖边沼泽觅食、嬉戏。纳帕海是黑颈鹤最理想的栖息地。
纳帕海东山之上，是中甸古寺——衮饮寺的遗址。古树参天，郁郁葱葱，四周断垣残缺，瓦砾遍地，该寺建于元末，毁于清初之争。据史料记载，该寺有一尊三丈六尽高的强巴佛像，明代旅行家徐霞客曾欲慕名前往参观，因被丽江木氏土司所阻拦未能如愿而抱憾不已。登临古寺，纳帕海草原尽收眼底。
