      中国古代关于诗歌社会作用的一种说法。它反映了封建社会中统治阶级对于文艺的功利主义要求。最早提出这一说法的是《毛诗序》(见《诗序》)。
  
  《毛诗序》归纳《诗经》十五国风的社会作用及其特点说:"风,风也,教也;风以动之,教以化之。"这里的"风",包含本源、体制、功用三重意义;就本源讲,它发源于古人认为音乐是模拟大自然风声的结果,如《国语·周语》:"瞽帅音官以风土"、《吕氏春秋·仲夏纪·古乐》篇:"帝......乃令飞龙作效八风之音",引申而为各地方的民谣,如《左传·襄公十八年》师旷所说的"吾骤歌北风,又歌南风","北风"、"南风"即指北方和南方的歌谣,从《诗经》中的《国风》,就是指的当时各国地方的歌谣。从体制方面说,"风"即风诵吟咏,如《论衡·明雩》篇所说:"风乎舞雩;风,歌也。"从其功用讲,则是"风教"。孔颖达《毛诗正义》:"微动若风,言出而过改,犹风行而草偃,故曰风"。"《尚书》之'三风十愆',疾病也;诗人之四始六义,救药也。"即诗之美刺是一种改良政治"疾病"之"救药",背出而合训。同时,"风教"又包括两方面的要求:一是指诗人创作的诗歌,在流行中对人们起到感化作用。如《毛诗序》说:"是以一国之事系一人之本谓之风。"《毛诗正义》说:"诗人览一国之意以为己心,故一国之事系此一人使言之也。但所言者,直是诸侯之政,行风化于一国。"即指诗人创作的诗歌应在社会生活中起到教化作用。二是指统治阶级的"上"对于"下"的教化,如《毛诗序》说:"上以风化下。"《白虎通德论·三教》说:"教者,效也。上为之,下效之。"即认为在"上"者应运用诗歌教化"下"民。"风教"是通过诗歌的具体感人的特点(感动、感化等)实现的。《毛诗序》强调说:"正得失,动天地,感鬼神,莫近于诗。"对诗歌的教化力量作了高度的估价。这就是在封建社会中长期流行的"风教"说,它对封建社会的诗歌及诗论发生过很大的影响。
