坡积裙是在水流在遇到坡度减小，磨阻加大，或突然分散的情况下，它的动能即不足以搬运所携全部泥沙，而将泥沙堆积下来。坡面水流到了坡麓因坡度突然减小而将所携泥沙碎石沿坡麓堆积下来，其形如裙故称坡积裙。鉴别坡积物的主要标志是其成分都是坡上来的，大小混杂，碎石有棱有角，并且沿坡麓堆积。坡积裙经过几万年的累积可厚达十多米，如果山前地带随山地上升，坡积裙被出山河流切穿，就形成山前坡积台地。
