丹麦诗人。出身名门贵族，父亲在挪威任州长。生于挪威哈伦，后随父亲迁居哥本哈根。1807年英军围城时曾一度参军。在大学期间先读法律，后转学自然科学。1821年获动物学博士学位。同年前往法国和意大利学习。1827年返回丹麦，在索勒学院任自然科学讲师，以文学创作为主。他的最受欢迎的作品是历史小说《威廉·扎伯恩》(1834) 、 《炼金术士》(1836)、《一个波兰家庭》（1839）、《罗伯特·福尔坦》(1853)以及《抒情诗》(1842、1854)和《抒情诗与浪漫史》(1861)。晚年任哥本哈根大学美学教授，并研究文学史，研究欧伦施莱厄、莎士比亚的创作以及冰岛"萨迦"，并撰写回忆录《我的童年和青年的回忆Ⅰ -Ⅱ》(1867～1871)。死于罗马。
