中国全国性农业文献信息中心,主要任务是收藏、研究和提供农业科技文献和信息。前身是中国农业科学院图书馆、中国农业科学院情报所和中国农业科技出版社。中国农业科学院图书馆成立于1957年，前身为华北农业科学研究所图书室。1957年的《全国图书协调方案》将其确定为全国第一中心图书馆委员会成员馆，担负全国农业中心图书馆的任务。中国农业科学院情报所成立于1957年，1985年 5月该所同时也称为农牧渔业部 (今农业部) 情报研究所。中国农业科技出版社成立于1985年。1987年7月，经中国农业部和国家科委批准，将上述3个单位合并，改为今名，1990年 7月中国农业科技出版社独立建制。截至1990年底，该中心收藏书刊资料共66万册(件)，其中图书26.3万册，资料28.5万件，现期期刊3000多种(外文期刊1800多种),与世界上46个国家240个单位建立了书刊交换关系。中心大楼面积1.19万平方米，书库占4000平方米，可藏120万册图书。开辟了9个阅览室。1990年接待读者5.2万人次。流通书刊资料9.3万册(件)次,与18个国家的22个图书馆有馆际互借关系。中心拥有计算机、彩色胶印、声像、缩微、语言教学系统等现代化设备，另外,还利用世界著名的农业数据库AGRIS、CABI、AGRICOLA文摘磁带开展机检定题服务。中心设16个部、处、室、厂，负责文献采集、加工、流通、专业情报研究、书刊编辑与出版、翻译、咨询以及系统数据处理等项业务，围绕农业现代化发展的需要，提供国内外农业生产科技情报和商品信息。1990年中心在职职工为326人，其中具有高级技术职务的科技人员52人,中级技术职务的科技人员74人。1986年起中心作为国际农业情报系统(AGRIS)中国国家中心，组织协调华北、 华中、华东、东北、华南、西北、西南 7个地区分中心的工作。1983年 5月和1985年11月先后成立了中国农业图书馆协会和中国农学会科技情报分科学会，开展了农业图书情报学术活动。1980年起，先后疏通了与国际英联邦农业局(CABI)、联合国粮农组织 (FAO)、国际农业科学技术情报系统(AGRIS)、美国国立农业图书馆(NAL)和加拿大国际发展研究中心(IDRC)等 4条国际情报交流渠道，引进了世界 3大著名农业数据库。中心主要出版物有中外文科技资料目录、《中国农业文摘》等14种检索类农业情报刊物和《农业科技通讯》、《农牧情报研究》、《农业图书情报工作学刊》等 6种学术和报道性农业情报刊物，每年传递国内外科技信息 9万余条，发行量70万份(册)。此外该中心还出版了几十种农业科技图书。 (见彩图)
