若断裂发生于染色体的二个末端，那么断裂下来的两个断片彼此可以粘合成无着丝粒碎片，而带着丝粒的部分可通过两断端的粘合形成环状染色体。不带着丝粒的碎片往往消失，而带着丝粒的部分能继续进行有丝分裂。如慢性粒细胞白血病患者向急性方向转化时，常可见到环状染色体。
