是关于生命信息传递与编码的定量理论，着重阐明信息过程及信息与物质载体之间的关系。信息是控制论中最基本的概念之一。维纳认为：“信息意指获得解决问题的知识，……信息本身在时间和空间范围传递着有关过程的知识。”生命信息大致可以分为两大类：基因型信息和记忆型信息。生物大分子存储的基因信息是决定生命体及其活动特征的遗传信息。最近公布的人类基因有约31.6亿碱基对，其信息量约为1.26×1010比特（bit）。脑中存储的记忆型信息约为107bit，而允许存储的信息量估计可达1013bit。生理学家将脑的功能分为思维、记忆、感觉、意志和行为反应等多方面，其中包括了大量复杂的信息过程。信息过程与生命体的物理和化学过程密切关联。目前认为（推测）短期记忆存储在神经网络中，而长期记忆存储在生物大分子结构中。
