中国南宋哲学家。字正则,号水心,浙江永嘉人。孝宗淳熙五年(1178)进士,曾任太常博士、权兵部侍郎、工部侍郎、知建康府兼沿江制置使等要职。力主抵抗金贵族的侵略,反对"屈意损威,以就和好"。他注重实际事功,厌恶"专以心性为宗主"的唯心主义理学。认为宇宙间现象都是物质性的,如天、地、水、火、雷、风、山、泽,无非"气"的体现,所谓"道"或"理"不能离开事物而存在。他反对老子"道在物先"和朱熹"理在事先"的说法。在教育思想方面,他主张"兴起天下之人才",造就"豪杰特起之士"。他对于当时学校与科举感到不满,说州县学校只是"徒以聚食"的供学生吃饭场所,而"用科举之常法,不足以得天下之才"。他提出学习范围和方法有下列各点:①明古今百家之学,融合贯通各种流派思想。②学贵致用,志在拯救当前危局,出为世用。③独立思考,有新见解。认为"未脱模拟之习",徒然生搬硬套,不能适应"目前之用"。④不断学习与积累知识经验,才能有所成就。他说:"学非一日之积也,道岂一世而成哉","习而愈悦,久而愈成"。⑤学思结合,感觉经验与理性思维不可偏废。认为"学则内外交相明","古人未有不内外交相成而至于圣贤"。他指出,古代有学问有成就的人,都是能够做到感觉经验与理性思维相结合的。这就批判了否定见闻知识、空谈心性的理学家的学习方法。叶适的著作有:《水心先生文集》、《水心别集》、《习学记言》等。
