三十年前北京天桥之形式与而今无甚差别。所歧异者唯一般卖艺人技术之不同耳。俗称有“八大怪”之说，就余所见所知者略述于下：
赵瘸子之杠子，此人幼年武艺极有功夫，因踢腿用力太猛遂致残废，或有谓与人争斗被敌人打伤者。但以根半腿人而能在杠上耍练种种技术，此所以为怪也。
韩麻子之相声，此人专以恢谐逗笑或学各种卖货声，甚有趣味。嘴极刻薄，其村野不堪入耳，有时亦能掉文骂人。观彼之形象甚为古怪，面紫多麻，其眉目间含有若干荡意。
人人乐之口技，此人名姓余不甚记忆，因其“人人乐”三宇足可代表其技能，故吾人反将其姓名忽略焉。盖彼一人而能兼五六人说话，且能学各种雀鸟叫唤，并能学鸡猫猪狗声音。
穷不怕白土撒字，彼能以白土子面用二指捏之向地上撤丈尺双钩大宇，颇有形象，如“一笔虎”、“一笔福”、“一笔寿”等大宇。
呼胡李之洋铁壶，或谓其为山西省某酒店之伙计，因好唱被辞来京，遂在天桥自树一帜。以洋铁筒塞入鼻孔中，复将破洋铁壶悬于腰间，两手拉一梆子呼胡，一边走，一边拉，一边唱。
所怪者“万人迷”三字是其自称之名词也。 怔米三之铁锤，此人年有六十余岁，面紫多麻，肥胖大肚。练就一身硬肉，有铁练流星锤一对，重有二十斤左右。每日在天桥把场子打好，即将上衣脱下，凸其肚皮，一手捣其铁练流星锤向肚中擂之三五次，即向观众要钱。只以铁锤锤肚为能，实技术中之一怪耳。
腊溺高之山西小曲，此人余只闻其名，未见其面。所唱多系各码头调，类“呼胡李”一流。惟不甚知其详细，故亦无所叙述。
其后为城内某邸闻知，喜其滑稽，传至府中，赏以侍卫钱粮，供各福晋妇女之消遣，为开心去闷之计耳。
以上八怪为三十年前天桥一带之生意人，至今无一存者。其中或为余所亲见或余所耳食，虽系远年旧闻，亦可为补阙之文字也。
