防空体系是各种防空组织和设施组成的有机整体。是抗击敌方空袭、实施防空作战的基础。主要包括：情报预警系统、指挥控制系统、拦截武器系统及保障勤务系统和人民防空系统等。情报预警系统由空中预警、地面警戒雷达、无线电侦察、对空观察等分系统及电子情报传递设备组成，以多种手段尽早发现、识别和跟踪敌空袭兵器，并将空中目标信息及时、准确、连续地传至指挥控制系统，提供决策指挥所需的情报。指挥控制系统由各级指挥所及其控制的引导、制导雷达，电子计算机和通信设施组成，人工或自动搜集和处理空中情报，掌握空中动态，判定目标性质，选定最佳作战方案，指挥和引导拦截系统进行作战，并向部队和有关单位通报情况。拦截武器系统由歼击机、地空导弹、高射炮和电子对抗装备等组成，根据指挥控制系统提供的作战方案及跟踪拦截数据，对敌空袭兵器实施拦截和干扰。保障勤务系统保证上述系统的生存和任务的完成。人民防空系统负责组织人员物资防护和消防、医疗救护等工作。
防空体系是在防空作战实践中逐渐发展和完善的。其基本要求是：结构设置合理，各分系统能够密切协调,最大限度地发挥各自的效能，形成整体威力,对敌空袭实施有效的抗击和反击。
随着科学技术的进步，空袭兵器的发展和防空作战空间、规模的扩大，现代防空体系将进一步改进预警、指挥和武器系统，向着防飞机、防导弹、防航天兵器三位一体的方向发展。
