区域经济学中的增长极理论是在法国经济学家弗郎索瓦佩鲁的增长极理论基础上发展起来的。佩鲁增长极理论的基本观点是，经济增长不是同时出现在所有的部门，而是首先集中在那些具有创新能力的行业和主导产业部门。由于供给函数和市场需求的不可分性，这些具有创新能力的行业与主导产业部门常常聚集于经济空间的某些点上，形成增长极。增长极是一种具有推动性的经济单位，或是具有空间聚集特点的推动性单位的集合体。经济的增长将首先发生在增长极上，然后通过各种方向向外扩散，对整个经济发展产生影响。区域经济学者把佩鲁的增长极概念和思想引入到区域经济研究之中，融入地理空间概念，从而产生了区域经济的增长极理论。
