太平关乡，曾名太平乡，一九八二年地名普查时因省内有重名而更名，它是一座古老的江南小镇，位于江西九江市彭泽县西南部，东濒大湖水产养殖基地－芳湖，南与囊括龙宫洞的群山毗连，西与鄱阳湖的外延接壤，北通长江中游红光码头，早就以其优越的地理环境、便利的水陆交通和兴盛的商业贸易而闻名遐尔。 太平关乡为低山滨湖丘陵地区，地势南高北低，北面大片丘陵，东面为芳湖湖畔，总面积为64.23平方公里,辖12个行政村,总人口2.1241万人,耕地18371亩，林地37058亩，水面4500亩，处于中亚热带的过渡带，湿润季节气候，日照充足，雨量充沛，四季分明，无霜期长，适宜于亚热带作物正常生长，适宜茶叶、松、杉、竹等林木生产。 自然资源：境内有日涌水量480吨且补给源广泛的天然优质矿泉水，含有十多种人体必需的元素，达到国家开采标准；有参天耸立的优质杉树，适宜于装璜、建筑等的重要材料，蓄积量达63734立方米；遍布全乡的塘、库、堰、圩面积4600亩，储存了充足的水资源，是彭泽鲫、中华绒螯蟹良好的富营养型养殖基地；圩垦荒山主要生长丝茅草、狗尾草、尖苔、蛾子草等为主植被群落，草质优良，适口性佳，属2等3级，是放牛、羊的上等饲料，每亩鲜草可产560公斤；地处太平东南处蕴藏着丰富的煤矿资源，矿源大、煤层厚，可开采使用。同时旅游资源极为丰富，是集风光、古战场为一体的综合性旅游系列：即以鼓楼山、白沙水库为主体的自然风景旅游系列；以望夫山战场遗迹的人文景观旅游系列。 全乡乡镇企业、民营企业初具规模：有装机容量400千瓦时的灌溉、发电并用的白沙发电站：有年生产成套纱布80万米的棉麻纺织厂：有年产600万块砖瓦厂;有年生产加工2.5万吨新鲜蔬菜的原野食品有限公司等。 基础设施有较大发展，全乡路况不断好转，路网逐步健全。有与彭湖公路交接的定龙公路纵贯本乡全镜，路面硬化，各村都相继建设水泥路，公路网络四通八达；太平电信所开通2800门程控电话，中国移动，中国联通公司基站网络覆盖全乡，通讯水平有了极大的提高。电力事业也得到迅速的发展，农网改造全面完成，有效地降低了电价，彻底解决了制约经济发展的能源瓶颈。
