宝光街道位于高州城鉴江河西面，从平江至八角山沿江河岸线长30多公里，东与潘州街道、山美街道相邻，北面与南塘镇相邻，南邻石仔岭街道、石鼓镇，西接荷塘镇、沙田镇。全街道总面积159平方公里，总人口81783人，辖18个村委会和4个居委会，境内207国道穿越南北，历来是高州商贸物流集散地和乡企重点工业区、城郊型三高农业粮食、水果、渔业、畜牧、养鸽主产区，是“一乡一品”生产基地，乡镇企业和农业科技示范连续多年获得市表彰和奖励。2003年、2004年连续两年被评为高州市“经济综合实力十强镇(街道)”。宝光街道旅游资源丰富，文物古迹众多，景观迷人。有建于明朝万历年间中国第二高塔宝光塔；有种植于明朝，号称“土无双”惟一结果实的缅茄树；有传说中晋朝道士潘茂名升仙之处及留下历代文人诗词雅句的观山寺；有风光旖旎的高城八景之一的佛子岭自然保护区。
宝光街道现有乡镇企业1300家，500万元以上规模企业共18家，其中年产值超亿元企业3家，超千万元企业5家，主要工业有食品加工、皮手套、橡胶、家具制造、精选高岭土、耐火材料等。2004年全街道工业总产值7．3亿元，其中新办企业23家，新增工业产值8000万元。
宝光街道城郊型三高农业发展喜人，已形成菜、果、鱼、畜、鸽五大商品生产基地，是城市菜篮子工程菜、肉、果的主产地之一。粮食年产稻谷16174吨，连续11年实现“吨谷镇”。现有水果面积6．8万亩，其中荔枝30650亩，龙眼23014亩，香蕉15000亩，独有品种马来西亚大红蕉1000亩。养殖业以猪、鱼、鸽为主，年供应城市水产品10258吨，生猪82291头，该街道被列入全国“黄塘猪”生产保护区；有养鸽专业村20条，种鸽存栏30万对，产品远销珠三角大中城市。2004年，宝光街道农业总产值达3．5亿元。
