通过电子计算机的2进位制的编码方法,使文字和图像同时排在一起。由于文字与图像的原稿性质不同，信息发生方式也不一样。20世纪70年代末期发展的拼合方法，是在电子计算机操纵的排版系统上，加装 1台图像发生装置，发出的编码信号叠加在文字部分的编码信号上，使排成的底片图文兼备。80年代由于微型计算机技术的发展 ，利用供个人使用的微机 ，如美国 IBM PC、Apple 等机和相应的图像扫描处理软件串接在文字输出，也可以实现文字和单色图像的拼合。为使彩色报纸、杂志在不同地区同时出版，国际出版业还设计将英国克罗斯菲尔德公司的分色机与蒙纳公司的文字排版机结合起来，实现彩色图画与文字拼合的书报版。
