中国现存的古建筑多是木结构或砖木结构，极易引起火灾，预防火灾是古建筑管理工作中的首要一环。根据 1984 年文化部和公安部发布的《古建筑消防管理规则》的规定和要求，每处古建筑都必须指定专人负责防火工作，要按照实际情况和可能，建立隔绝火源、电源等严格的防火管理制度，置备必要的消防设施，保证古建筑的安全。
在古建筑保护范围内应开辟消防通道，设置泡沫灭火机、干粉灭火机、砂袋、水桶等简易消防器材，并应安装环形消防水道和一定数量的消火栓。有消防水管道的地方应和外部水源接通。无消防水管道的地方，可用机井或引河水作为水源，同时修建能储存一定水量的蓄水池。
重要的木构古建筑物，可安装报警器或自动喷淋式消防设备。
各项消防设施须定期检查。
