2004年12月27日上午，直11w型武装直升机在江西吕蒙机场成功实现首飞。它标志着直11武装型机改进改型工作取得了阶段性的胜利。
直11w机是在直11型机的基础上改进研制的一种轻型武装直升机，通过增加武器配置和安装武器火控系统及昼夜观瞄系统，成为可进行昼夜作战，具有搜索、识别、跟踪目标及对地和一定的对空攻击能力的武装直升机。
直11机是国内自行研制机种中化钱最少、研制时间最短、使用表现最好的“争气机”，是我国第一个有“自主知识产权”的直升机型号。
直11型直升机为军民通用型单发单桨带尾桨式直升机，主旋翼由星形柔性桨毂和3片复合材料桨叶构成，尾桨2片，为翘翘板式结构，装有1台涡轴8d发动机，滑橇式起落架。机体主要采用轻合金结构：机身为吊篮式，尾桨为硬壳式，平尾为单梁双闭式金属结构。
