都柳江沿岸山麓边的侗寨，“四月八”前后的种棉花活动已沿袭成新婚成新婚女婿帮丈人家劳动生产的习俗。这一种生产习俗演化成为青年社交的娱乐型节令，具有民俗的多种性格。种棉节这天，新郎新娘娘带着装著一新的青年伙伴，备好腌鱼、腌肉、盐蛋，包着糯米饭到山上作午餐。种棉地里，芦笙手合奏笙曲，小伙子深翻细拍，姑娘们下种上粪。活路完了，插上一枝挂满蛋壳的树枝，象征着棉花的丰收。这时，摆起了丰盛的午餐，一场野宴便在地边举行。一些村寨还带着狗或鸡鸭到地边宰杀下酒，并有煮糖粥喜庆的习俗。午宴完毕，青年们心情欢乐，直到天色不早，方在笙曲中有说有笑地回家。晚上，女方宴请丈夫的众伙伴，全体姑娘均来作陪，大家欢歌畅饮。种棉活动，激发了青年们的劳动情绪，播下了爱情的种子。
