一、地理位置
保护区位于广东省新丰县城西北部。生物地理分区属2.1.2和1（1）4a（2）。面积2000公顷。其地理位置在东经114°13’，北纬24°07’。
二、自然概况
保护区内海拔600—1400米的山峰有10多座。它是广东省最大水库——新丰江水库的集水区，有丰富的水力资源、温泉，流量每天300吨。年均温21℃，年降水量1800毫米。
三植物资源
保护区内植物类型属常绿阔叶林，海拔1000米以上的山脊保存有近原始林，700米以下的山谷多为天然次生林。
四 动物资源
保护区动物地理分区属via，属国家保护动物，一级有华南虎、云豹、金钱豹、黑鹿、黄腹角雉、白颈长尾雉、白鹤、苍鹰、蟒，二级有穿山甲、水獭、大灵猫、金猫、水鹿、岩羊、鬟羚、白鹇。经济动物数量较多的有野猪、黄樟、果子狸、竹鸡、相思鸟、画眉等。
五 经营管理
保护区是根据广东省人民政府奥办（1990）13号批文建立的。
