湖北省名山、道教圣地、著名风景区和旅游地。位于省境东南通山县南部，处鄂、赣边界湖北一侧，属幕阜山脉中段。为新华夏构造体系隆起带的组成部分，燕山运动褶皱成山，北东-南西走向，主要由花岗岩构成。主峰海拔1543米,山体总面积约60平方公里。4条山溪将山顶呈掌状分割成5个山头,凤凰岭居中。森林面积40平方公里,1/3为楠竹林。有马头狼、石耳、龙须草、灵芝、猕猴桃等野生动植物和一山三洞三峰六石十崖等天然胜迹。山巅龙潭湖侧有灵泉；喷雪崖为瀑布，下注70余米；还有温泉。南北朝时依山建宫殿 9座。宋道士张道清在此建道院，宋敕封"钦天端庆宫"；元、明、清又多次受敕封，至清代乾嘉时期达于鼎盛，成为中国五大道场之一。1949年后，在此沿山溪建梯级水电站，并建有疗养与游览设施，为旅游、避暑地。西麓牛迹岭有李自成墓，建有"闯王陵"园和李自成纪念馆等。
