The paper is to present the analysis of phytoplankton composition,species diversity,key species and their cell abundance distritution in the waters of the Fangji Island,Maoming,based on the survey carried out in August,December of 2003 and February,and May of 2004.

放鸡岛是茂名第一个潜水基地，位于博贺港的东南方，水东港的西南方，距两海港里程相等，从这两个港口乘快艇半个多小时即可到达。海岛四周的海水极为清澈，水深6至12米处能见度8米远，站在岸边，可以清楚地看见远处水底的礁石。据说只有夏威夷的海水能与之媲美。
