共有16种，为一类特殊的小型底层鱼类；体长，近圆筒形，前部粗圆,向后渐细，且稍侧扁，胸部之前的腹面平坦;头圆钝，吻较短；口下位，弧形或马蹄形；有须4对，1对位于口角,其余3对由前至后成对排列在颏部；眼侧上位，瞳孔圆形或呈垂直椭圆形；鳞较大，胸、腹部一般裸露，多数种类体背部鳞片具有皮质短嵴；侧线完全,平直;背鳍无硬刺，胸鳍平展，位近腹面；鳔小，2室,前室包于骨囊或膜囊中，后室细小，游离。分布在东亚地区，除朝鲜产的3种外,其余的种类皆分布于中国东部各河流中。中国常见的有长须鳅和宜昌鳅等。营底栖生活，通常栖息于水体底层的砂石面上。以底栖无脊椎动物及藻类为食。乐佩琦
