临沧市技工学校建于1984年，隶属临沧市劳动和杜会保障局，为省合格技工学校。经省经贸委、省旅游局等部门确定，学校设昆明理工大学成人教育学院临沧分院、云南省第64国家职业技能鉴定所、云南省安全生产教育培训14站、临沧市煤矿安全技术培训中心、临沧市企业管理人员工商管理培训学校、云南省旅游行业教育培训定点单位、云南省电子政务技术培训站、临沧市公务员专业技术人员计算机培训站等工作职能机构。经过20年发展，现已成为临沧市集多层次学历教育、职业培训、职业技能鉴定、推荐就业为一体的多功能综合培训基地。
学校坚持“教书育人、管理育人、环境育人、服务育人”的教育方针，训练学生“会学习、会生活、会做事、会沟通、会合作、会生存”，以适应现代企业对人才的综合素质要求。在教学中，突出操作技能训练，注重学生动手能力的培养，让学生掌握一技或多技之长，从而增强了毕业生的工作适应能力。毕业生的高就业率，赢得了家长的信赖、社会的肯定。

在临沧市教育资源整合中，我校被市委、市政府确定为市级唯一一所独立建制发展的中等职业技术学校；在2005年1月第四次市委常委会上，提出：“职业技术教育改革要以市技工学校为龙头学校，整合有关县（区）职高，强化职业技术培训”；市委、市政府同时决定，市技校于2005年3月中旬迁入原临沧农校校址进行独立办学。
