在神经内分泌系统的参与下，机体对血浆渗透压的调节作用。渗透压的调节是一个复杂的生理过程。当体内水分丧失过多时 (如大量出汗、严重呕吐或腹泻），血浆晶体渗透压升高，对渗透压感受器的刺激加强，使神经垂体释放抗利尿激素增加，促进远曲小管和集合管对水的重吸收。于是尿量减少，从而保留了人体的水分，使血浆渗透压恢复正常。反之，当大量饮水使血浆渗透压降低时，减少了对渗透压感受器的刺激，于是抗利尿激素的合成和分泌减少，使水在远曲小管和集合管的重吸收也减少，尿量增多，从而排出体内多余的水分，使晶体渗透压升高，恢复正常。
