| 夜蛾 Noctuidaenoctuids 鳞翅目夜蛾科的通称。全世界约2万种，中国约1600种。成虫口器发达，下唇须有钩形、镰形、椎形、三角形等多种形状，少数种类下唇须极长，可上弯达胸背。喙发达，静止时卷曲，只少数种类喙退化。复眼半球形，少数肾形。触角有线形、锯齿形、栉形等。额光滑或有突起。翅色多较晦暗，热带地区种类比较鲜艳。前翅通常有几条横线，中室中部与端部通常分别可见环纹与肾纹，亚中褶近基部常有剑纹。体型一般中等，但不同种类可相差很大，小型的翅展仅10毫米左右，大型的翅展可达130毫米。多为植食性害虫，少数种类捕食其他昆虫，例如紫胶猎夜蛾又名紫胶白虫即为紫胶虫的天敌之一。某些种类成虫喙很强，能刺穿果皮吸食果汁，还有少数种类能吮吸人、畜的分泌物。成虫夜间活动，多数对灯火和糖蜜有正趋性。白天隐藏于荫蔽处，栖止时翅多平贴于腹背。夜蛾科许多种类在大量发生时，会给农作物造成大害，粘虫、小地老虎、黄地老虎、棉铃虫等都是著名的作物害虫。
