脊椎动物，鸟纲，雉科。为我国雉科中分布最广的鸟。雄雉体长近0.9米。羽毛华丽，尾羽较长、中央尾羽尖长，呈灰黄色，具有对称黑色横斑。头顶灰褐色，缀铜绿色光泽，眉纹白色。颈部下方有1圈显著白色环纹，故又称环颈雉。前额、耳羽、颈侧、颏部均为黑色，缀蓝绿色光泽。足后具有革质距，可用作攻击敌人的武器。雌雉较小，尾羽较短，均有黑褐色横斑；无距，羽毛呈黄褐色，具有栗红色斑纹。我国境内约有19个亚种。喜栖于蔓生草莽的丘陵中。夏季繁殖期，可上迁高山坡处，冬季迁至山脚草原及田野间。喜食谷类，浆果、种子和昆虫。善走而不能久飞。繁殖时在灌木丛或草丛中的地面凹陷处营简单的巢，内铺落叶、枯草。每窝产卵6～15个，早成雏。肉味美，尾羽可作饰羽用。由于外形似鸡，故俗称“野鸡”。我国各地多有分布，仅海南省和西藏的羌塘高原处尚未发现。
