缨翅目中一个中等大小的科。前翅宽而端圆，有横脉。雌虫产卵器向背面弯曲。触角9节,在第3、4节上有纵的、弯曲的、环绕顶端的带状或长卵形感觉域。世界性分布。下分3个亚科：黑蓟马亚科(Melanothripinae)、纹蓟马亚科(Aeolothripinae)和锤翅蓟马亚科(Mymaro-thripinae)。在本科中，纹蓟马属包含的种类最多，代表种为横纹蓟马。
