酉阳土家族苗族自治县隶属重庆市。地处巫山大娄山中山区，地势中部高，多为船形山，柱状山；东西两侧低，多为中山、低丘、溶槽、平谷、洼地。故形成以毛坝盖为分水岭的东面沅江、西面乌江两大水系。县北部小咸乡大营村老灰阡梁子为最高点，海拔1895米，西部沿岩乡桃花村董家寨为最低点，海拔263米。全县5173平方公里的土地上，居住着72万多勤劳质朴的土家、苗、汉各族人民。是重庆市人口最多、幅员面积最大、经济发展起步最晚的一个县。
境内已知的矿藏资源有：汞矿储量9500吨，品位0.1－0.17。硫铁矿储量789万吨，品位22－28，高达40。萤石储量10.72万吨品位60－80。重晶石储量13.6万吨，品位64.52。铁矿储量684.6万吨。磷矿储量357万吨，品位12.9－15.27。煤炭储量214万吨。大理石储量10亿吨，有黑色、灰色等品种。野生动物有国家二、三类保护动物毛冠鹿、豹、云豹、大、小灵猫、红腹角雉、大鲵等7种。野生植物资源有：五倍子年产80吨。猕猴桃年产1000吨。青蒿（现提练青蒿素年产1.5吨），银花等野生药材多种。
