将传统短语结构语法（主要指前后语无关语法）中诸如"名词"、"动词"......等语法变元变为对某领域有特定涵义的语法变元后所形成的语法。例如，对飞机票订购系统可设置如"目的地"、"航程"、"飞行时间"之类的语法变元，在传授电路知识的智能化计算机辅助教学系统SOPHIE中，采用诸如"测量"、"电路元件"、"晶体管"、"假设"之类的语法变元。对每一变元建立一条语法规则，每一条规则实际上就是用LISP语言编写的一段程序。语义型语法允许有一定模糊性，如果系统对输入语句中某些词不清楚，则跳过这些词而分析句子的其他部分。为了防止全局性失误,SOPHIE在回答学生提问时采用全句应答而不采用简略形式，并且还指明现在是对哪一个问题进行回答。为建立自然语言前端处理机的需要而研制的 LIFER系统也采用了语义型语法。
