从事专业情报工作并具有中心功能的情报机构。专业情报中心除从事搜集、加工、贮存、检索和向用户提供专业文献、数据或事实等情报服务外，还针对专业领域的需要开展情报研究工作。多数国际情报机构属专业情报中心。如联合国环境规划署的"国际环境情报源咨询服务系统"、联合国工业发展组织的"工业情报系统"、联合国粮食与农业组织的"国际农业科学技术情报系统"、世界卫生组织的"流行病学情报服务中心"等，均系专业情报中心。在中国，这一名称也泛指各专业部门直属科技情报研究所，如冶金工业部科技情报研究所、铁道部科技情报研究所、轻工业部科技情报研究所等等，分别属于各该专业系统的情报中心。这类专业情报中心除向本专业系统情报用户提供服务外，还对本专业系统内各级情报机构有组织协调和业务指导的功能。
