指一个汉字由最初书写的字形上所反映出来的意义。例如"从"，甲骨文作，一人随从一人，表示相从的意思。这就是"从"字的本义。《说文解字》说："相听也"，那是引申发展出来的意思。又如"莫"，篆书从日从，是众草,日没于众草之中,表示日暮的意思。《说文》说："日且冥也。"这是"莫"字最初造字的本义。后来借用为否定词,又另造一"暮"字,代表原来的意思，那就是一般所说的后起本字了。本义是对引申义、转义和假借义来说的，也可以称之为基本意义。汉字数量很大,除一小部分象形字和表意字以外,大多数只能从古代文献中去探求其最早使用的意义，很难知道最初的意义。汉代许慎作《说文解字》，采录古代经籍中的训释，多能申明字的本义，但有些须根据商周古文字参验，正其谬误。
