The family is re_divided into five subfamilies according to morphological and molecular characters: Cystopterioideae, Athyrioideae, Deparioideae, Diplazioideae, Rhachidosoroideae.
前人根据染色体的基数 ,将蹄盖蕨科划分为 3个亚科 ,但没有得到分子证据的支持 ;本文依据分子系统学的研究结果 ,再结合形态特征 ,将该科重新划分为 5个亚科 :冷蕨亚科、蹄盖蕨亚科、对囊蕨亚科、双盖蕨亚科和轴果蕨亚科。

希腊神话中的大地女神，是大地的体现。传说她从混沌中分离出来以后，单独生出了山、海和天神乌拉诺斯。她又与乌拉诺斯结合，生了提坦神、独眼巨神和百手巨神。独眼巨神和百手巨神被乌拉诺斯关进大地下面的塔尔塔罗斯。她为儿子们的呻吟所苦，怂恿克罗诺斯用镰刀阉割了自己的父亲。从乌拉诺斯伤口流到地上的血液里生出了埃里尼斯和巨神吉伽斯。她还与海结合，生了涅柔斯等海神。有的神话说，盖亚和乌拉诺斯是夜神的子女。人们认为她了解发生的每一件事，往往把她作为誓言的见证。作为收成的赐与者，她在希腊各地都受到崇拜。著名的德尔斐神庙最初是她的殿堂。在多多涅，她曾被尊为宙斯的妻子，后来被狄奥涅、赫拉等取代。在古希腊晚期，她时常与得墨忒尔和库柏勒混同。
