描述ColocasiaSchott芋属，天南星科，13种，分布于亚洲热带及亚热带地区，我国有8种，大都产江南各省，其中芋C.esculentum（L.）Schott常栽植于各地以供食用，品种甚多。多年生草本，有肉质的块茎，叶盾状着生，卵状心形或箭状心形；佛焰苞有粗柄，管厚，宿存，檐直立，脱落；肉穗花序的雄花部分和雌花部分为一段不育雄蕊所分隔，短于佛焰苞；花无花被；雄花有雄蕊3－6，合生；雌花：子房1室，胚珠多数，生于侧膜胎座上；浆果圆锥形或长圆形。本属和Alocasia属不同之点为胚珠多颗，生于侧膜胎座上，种子多数，细小，长圆形，有明显的纵条纹。
