庄严寺在兰州市城关区旧城中心鼓楼西侧。始建于唐代，相传为隋末金城校尉薛举故宅。大业十三年（617年），薛举在兰州称帝后，即为其皇宫。唐平定薛举后改为佛寺，由山门、厢房及前殿、正殿、后殿等构成三院落。据文献记载，元、明、清各代多次进行修缮，现存3座大殿。
庄严寺以塑、书、画“三绝”著称，正殿大佛塑像体态匀称生动，衣纹细腻逼真；原山门匾额“敕大庄严禅院”六字，为元代著名书法家李浦光所书，字体遒劲；正殿后壁观音壁画，仪态端庄优美，身披白衣，宛然如纱，净瓶柳枝，翠色如新。建国后辟作游览场所。
