硼酸能从胃肠道、损伤的皮肤迅速吸收，故内服和局部应用可中毒。小儿常见原因为应用含硼酸的爽身粉或用硼酸软膏涂布大面积湿疹，尿布疹，误服硼酸水或杀蟑螂丸等。中毒症状首先表现消化道症状，随即出现大片皮疹。部分病人可有肝脂肪变性、黄疸、肾损害；严重者感觉异常、共济失调、精神错乱、青紫、昏迷，甚至可死于休克、尿毒症。
