在许多蛋白质分子中，可以发现2到3个具有二级结构的肽段，在空间上互相接近，形成一个具有特殊功能的空间结构，称为蛋白质的“模序”。
一个模序总有其特异的氨基酸序列，发挥特殊的功能，例如“锌指结构”（zinc finger），此模体由一个α-螺旋和两个反平行的β-折叠三个肽段组成，形似手指，具有结合锌离子的功能。模体的特征性空间结构使其特殊功能的结构基础。
