属于奇蹄目、马科，别名野驴、骞驴。
西藏野驴属于大型有蹄类。外形与蒙古野驴相似，颈的背侧、肩部、背部为黄棕色，在冬季则变成浅棕色或棕褐色；颈的腹侧、胸、体侧、腹均为白色，与背侧毛色具有明显的分界线。
西藏野驴生活于高寒荒漠地带，夏季到海拔5000多米的高山上生活，冬季则到海拔较低的地方。好集群生活，善长奔跑，警惕性高。喜欢吃茅草、苔草和蒿类。在干旱的环境中会找到合适的地方用蹄刨坑挖出水来饮用，还可以供藏羚等有蹄类动物饮水。
西藏野驴产于西藏、甘肃、青海、新疆和四川。属于国家一级保护动物。
