观光农业是一种以农业和农村为载体的新型生态旅游业。近年来，伴随全球农业的产业化发展，人们发现，现代农业不仅具有生产性功能，还具有改善生态环境质量，为人们提供观光、休闲、度假的生活性功能。随着收人的增加，闲暇时间的增多，生活节奏的加快以及竞争的日益激烈，人们渴望多样化的旅游，尤其希望能在典型的农村环境中放松自己。于是，农业与旅游业边缘交叉的新型产业——观光农业应运而生。
观光农业是把观光旅游与农业结合在一起的一种旅游活动，它的形式和类型很多。根据德、法、美、日、荷兰等国和我国台湾省的实践，其中规模较大的主要有5种：
(l)观光农园：在城市近郊或风景区附近开辟特色果园、菜园、茶园、花圃等，让游客人内摘果、拔莱、赏花、采茶，享受田园乐趣。这是国外观光农业最普遍的一种形式；
(2)农业公园：即按照公园的经营思路，把农业生产场所、农产品消费场所和休闲旅游场所结合为一体；
(3)教育农园：这是兼顾农业生产与科普教育功能的农业经营形态。代表性的有法国的教育农场，日本的学童农园，台湾的自然生态教室等；
(4)森林公园；
(5)民俗观光村：到民俗村体验农村生活，感受农村气息。
20世纪90年代，我国农业观光旅游在大中城市迅速兴起。观光农业作为新兴的行业，既能促进传统农业向现代农业转型，解决农业发展的部分问题，也能提供大量的就业机会，为农村剩余劳动力解决就业问题，还能够带动农村教育、卫生、交通的发展，改变农村面貌，是为解决我国“三农问题”提供新的思路。因此可以预见，观光农业这一新型产业必将获得很大的发展。
