以人为因素为主而发展起来的宗教。恩格斯用语。指与自发宗教相对的、较高的宗教历史形态。根据马克思主义者的观点，社会存在决定社会意识，属于社会意识形态的宗教，其发生与发展，也决定于客观的社会历史条件。所以恩格斯以基督教为例，指出它是通过自然淘汰逐渐形成为世界宗教，而不是"用皇帝的敕令创造出来的"。另一方面，宗教产生于人类社会，与人有着根本的联系，任何宗教活动都少不了人的参与，因而人作为进行宗教活动的主体而带有的能动性，对宗教的产生和发展也有不容忽视的反作用。恩格斯基于这一观点，辩证地指出基督教之所以成为世界宗教，也"多少是人工造成的"。人为宗教与自发宗教的划分并不是绝对的，这是因为：①宗教发展中自发因素与人为因素互为消长；②一些现代所谓典型的人为宗教，起初也源于自发宗教。
