昔日菲迪皮得斯所跑过的路线，全程为40公里。第二届奥运会马拉松比赛程为40.260公里，第三届为40公里，第四届奥运会决赛马拉松跑的正式距离为42.195公里。这是因为，在1908年第四届伦敦奥运会召开时，英国的王室成员要观看马拉松比赛，大会组委会就将起点安排在温莎尔宫的草坪前，终点设在白城运动场，二者之间的距离为26英里，但从全程到王室成员面前还有385码，所以全程是26英里385码，折合后正为42.195公里。
