狼常常在晚上集体觅食，方圆近百里内都可留下它们觅食的足迹，甚至在必要时可整天整夜的跟踪目标。它们用其灵敏的听觉和嗅觉追踪猎物。在喀斯喀特棕狼生活的区域内生活着土著人，他们一直视狼为天敌，因为狼的食物也是他们的食物。但他们古老的狩猎方式并没有给喀斯喀特棕狼造成太大的威胁。17世纪欧洲人入侵北美大陆后，一直把狼作为主要的消灭对象。因为他们认识狼是野蛮的象征，夸张狼的残酷性，认为狼不但会吃掉牲畜，甚至还吃小孩子。从此，狼被视为恶魔的化身。狼在人类的不断猎杀下迅速减少。此时的北美动物学家们想到了狼的保护问题。可为时已晚，在北美已有几种狼相继灭亡。
1950年是人们在喀斯喀特地区能够见到喀斯喀特棕狼的最后一年。从此之后的几十年中，人们再也没有发现过它的踪迹。
