近几年来，绿色设计已延伸到机械制造业当中。而模具是工业生产的基础工艺装备，它的生产技术水平的高低，已成为衡量一个国家产品制造水平高低的重要标志，因而在模具行业中提倡绿色设计应更为重要。“绿色模具”不仅仅指在使用时对环境的影响小，还应是从制造到报废的整个生命周期内对环境的破坏是最小的。
绿色模具的生命周期与环境相关的有如下几个阶段：设计、制造、销售、使用、维护与服务和报废回收。绿色设计就是要在产品开发设计时就充分关注在这几个阶段中如何减轻其对环境的影响。
1、原材料的选择。模具材料选择是产品设计的第一步，因此，其绿色程度对产品的绿色性能有着极为重要的影响。绿色模具设计的材料选择对最终产品的“绿色程度”具有重要意义。绿色设计的材料选择必须建立在绿色材料的基础上
2、原材料的回收。绿色模具设计首先要考虑的是制造模具的原材料的回收问题，这是因为模具造价昂贵，它的回收利用可以大大节约资金和能源。
3、模具的可拆卸性设计。对于模具设计来说，可拆卸性就显得尤为重要，因为有实质要更换凸、凹模就可实现一种新产品的生产。不可拆卸不仅造成大量可重复零部件材料的浪费，而且因废弃物不好处置，还会严重污染环境。可拆卸设计要求所设计的结构易于拆卸、维护方便，并在产品报废后可重复使用。
4、采用模具先进制造技术。在制造过程中选用生产浪费最小、能量消耗最低的制造工艺也是非常重要的。
绿色设计优于传统的设计方法，虽然在短期内，它的投资略大于传统的设计，但从长远看来，如果我们采用绿色设计，那么在节能、降耗、增效益方面将会得到成倍的收获。可以这样说，绿色将是21世纪产品的主要特点之一，谁能向市场提供绿色产品，谁就能在市场竞争中占据有利位置。因此，企业无论从自身的长远发展角度，还是从人类的可持续发展战略角度，都应扬弃传统的设计方法，而大力加强对绿色设计的研究与应用。
