《中国现代小说史》 夏志清 著
美国哥伦比亚大学教授夏志清先生是西方汉学界研究中国现代文学的先行者和权威。他1961年由耶鲁大学出版社出版的英文代表作《中国现代小说史》在中国现代文学研究上具有开创性的意义。作者以其融贯中西的学识，宽广深邃的批评视野，探讨中国新文学小说创作的发展路向，尤其致力于“优美作品之发现和评审”，发掘并论证了张爱玲、张天翼、钱锺书、沈从文等重要作家的文学史地位，使此书成为西方研究中国现代文学史的经典之作，影响深远。
《中国现代小说史》也是内地80年代“重写文学史”运动的最重要的动力，而其坐标则是这部文学史对张爱玲、沈从文和钱钟书等人的发现和推崇。尤其张爱玲一直被认为是通俗小说家，在批评家眼里她是登不上大雅之堂的，但夏志清在小说史中给予张爱玲的篇幅比鲁迅的还要多上一倍，将她的小说与曼斯菲尔德、凯·安·波特、韦尔蒂和麦克勒斯相提并论。这对当时的港台文学界乃至之后的内地文学界都震动很大。
《中国现代小说史》英文版两度再版，而由刘绍铭、夏济安、李欧梵、水晶等众多港台一流学者翻译的中译繁体字本于1979年和1985年分别在香港和台湾出版，2001年又在香港出版了中译繁体字增删本。由复旦大学推出的中文简体字版是这部著名的文学史著作问世四十多年后，首次与中国大陆读者见面。
