The author of the present article sets forth and analyzes some well-known cases of ambiguity in English literary works,and then makes a study of the causes of ambiguity created purposefully by writers from the viewpoint of the British New Critic William Empson: ambiguity is justified by conveying the special effect of tension or the peculiar requirements of the situation.
笔者列举了英语文学作品中较为著名的歧义的例子,并引用英国新批语派评论家燕卜荪的观点来探讨由作者因素造成的歧义:歧义的运用应是为了制造紧张冲突的特殊效果或遵循情景的特别需要。

一燕，原名邵焱，浙江萧山人。中共党员。1961年毕业于中国人民大学新闻系。历任辽宁日报社、北京出版社及外文出版社文艺记者、编辑，《新观察》半月刊编委、编辑部主任、副编审，《中国有色金属报》副总编、副编审，《中国妇女》月刊副总编，编审。中华全国新闻工作者协会第四届理事，北京杂文学会理事。1960年开始发表作品。1984年加入中国作家协会。
