唐普愿，郑州新郑人。依大隈山大慧禅师受业，得法于江西马大师。含景匿耀，似不能言。贞元十年，挂锡池阳南泉山，蓑笠饭，牛混于樵牧，斫山畬田，足不下南泉三十年。太和中，池阳太守与宣使陆公、护军刘公固请开法，道化大行，号“南泉古佛”云。赞曰：“远祖师影不出庐山四十载，王老师足不下南泉三十年，此古人之盛节也。然皆得意后事，非初学所宜，出家儿大事未明，不远千里参寻知识，此何时乃守愚空坐，自失善利耶？赵州八十行脚，雪峰三登，投子九上洞山，敢为痴隐者告。”
