考古学和民族学关于文化起源的一种理论。这种理论认为文化的类似是由于传播的结果，它的基本立场是，把每种文化因素以及文化的复合体，都以传播论为中心来予以解释，同独立发生说相对立。从19世纪末到20世纪初，这种理论非常流行。英国考古学家G.E.史密斯和W.J.佩里等人，曾主张巨石文化由埃及传播到全世界等说法，目前已很少得到人们的承认。民族学上的文化圈，也属于文化传播论的一种。象上述极端的文化传播论，应该予以反对，但是在一定地区内形成的高度发展的古代文化，确曾通过文化交流，对邻近地区产生影响，因此也应该承认传播在文化发展中是起着一定的作用的。
